Magnesium and Sleep

Have you ever suffered with sleep deprivation(usually from children) or insomnia. If you have, you know how it can affect your ability to function normally.
Sleep is an essential for health and wellbeing. When we sleep the body systems can relax, giving the whole body time to repair and restore.
Many things can cause insomnia- diet, caffeine, alcohol, soft drinks, medications and drugs but most commonly it’s associated with stress.

Sleep problems can range from not being able to get to sleep, not being able to stay asleep or not being able to get back to sleep once you have woken up.
Sleep problems are very common, especially as we age, and often due to deficiencies such as Magnesium.
With stress it can be a vicious cycle– stress causes sleep problems and vice a versa. Stress managment techniques can help the first step in the right direction, but good sleep hygiene can also help.

So let’s talk sleep hygiene. What is sleep hygiene?
It’s about having a good bedtime routine-
1.Going to bed and getting up at the same time everyday (even weekends)
2.Turning off screens at least an hour before bed- no laying in bed on your phone or tablet.
3.No alcohol within three hours of bed and no caffeine after 3pm.

So how does Magnesium help the whole body and mostly with sleep?
Magnesium is vital for the function of all the body systems as it is involved in over 300 processes every second of the day. It’s the great muscle relaxer!
Most of us are magnesium deficient and one of the common symptoms is insomnia, but it can also cause anxiety, muscle cramps and pain, constipation and headaches just to name a few.
Magnesium is present in food and can be taken orally through supplementation but it’s poorly absorbed in the gut, with less than 50% getting through the digestive system.
The best way to absorb magnesium is through your skin. Taking a bath before bed with Magnesium Bath Flakes or Magnesium Muscle Soak is a great way to increase your magnesium levels and in turn improve your sleep.
Another way is to rub Magnesium Oil into your skin before going to bed.
Try our Magnesium products today, and you too can have great sleep!
